Antibiotic Resistance: How to Avoid and Discuss It With Your Doctor

It’s no secret that antibiotic resistance is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. Each year, more and more bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, making it harder and harder to treat infections. It’s important to be aware of this issue and take steps to avoid it. In this blog post, we will discuss how antibiotic resistance occurs and how you can prevent it. We will also talk about how to discuss antibiotic resistance with your doctor if you are concerned about it.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria mutate and become resistant to the antibiotics that are used to treat them. This can happen for a number of reasons, but it usually happens because of overuse or misuse of antibiotics. When antibiotics are overused, the bacteria they are supposed to kill become resistant to them. This means that the next time you get an infection, the antibiotic may not work.

There are a few things you can do to avoid antibiotic resistance. First, only take antibiotics when they are prescribed by a doctor. Never share antibiotics with someone else or take them for longer than prescribed. Second, practice good hygiene habits. This means washing your hands often and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Finally, make sure to cook meat and poultry thoroughly.

If you are concerned about antibiotic resistance, talk to your doctor about it. They will be able to provide you with more information and help you make the best decision for your health. If you have any questions about your health, our team of experts at South Macomb Internal Medicine are always here to help. Safe travels. At South Macomb Internal Medicine the patient comes first. Our priority is and always has been patient care before all else.

A Check In From South Macomb Internal Medicine – How Are You?

Check in

Hello all,

We are here for a little check in with you!  We hope you are well and that the first month of 2022 treated you well.  Yes it’s cold here in Michigan, yes it’s snowy here in Michigan, and as you know we have been picking up the pieces after the tragic passing of Dr. Scot Goldberg on December 21st.  Dr. Goldberg was a great man – a great doctor, a great leader, a great mentor, a great family man and a great friend.  His impact – certainly on all of us here at South Macomb Internal Medicine – will be felt for years to come and we can say without reservation that he made a mark in this world!  As was mentioned in his obituary, those who wish to further honor the memory of Dr. Scot F. Goldberg, MD, MBA may do so by making a contribution to:  Sib4Sib https://www.sib4sib.org/donate.html

A couple other tidbits we would like to share with you:

Here is an infographic we shared on our Facebook page from the CDC about how to avoid, spot and treat frostbite and hypothermia.  This information can obviously come in handy with the weather we’re having in Metro Detroit this winter.

We also found this great article about the five biggest trends in healthcare tech trends in 2022.  We are always interested in the latest and greatest – especially in tech and how it may impact how we treat our patients in the future!

That’s about it for now.  Wishing you all health and happiness – be safe, be kind, schedule your next appointment if you’re due, and WASH YOUR HANDS!

Well  Similar approach to the Harvard blog in that a wide range of topics are covered.  This is the New York Times health blog and there are many articles that are topical to current events as well.

KevinMD.com  This is the blog for us doctors!  Articles about the profession, the challenges, the rewards – written by doctors for doctors!

Medgadget  Fascinating stuff here about the latest in medical technology for you techies!  Want to know about the latest technique for minimally invasive diagnosis of thyroid cancer out of South Korea?  You’ll find articles like this here!

Science Daily – Medical Technology News  Another in the cutting edge category like Medgadget – fascinating stuff here if you want to know the latest in technology.

Life Of A Med Student  We’ve highlighted the top medical schools on Facebook and we love to encourage our young people who are looking at a life in medicine – if you are one of those then this blog is for you!  Great advice here.

Medical XPress  This site reads like a newswire of up-to-date medical news and research.  Pretty cool – it tells you the age of each entry (1 hour ago, 4 hours ago…)!

Dr. Barnard – Physicians Committee  As you know we focus on nutrition here quite a bit with many posts here on this blog by Nanette Cameron, RDN.  This blog is nutrition focused with a food-as-medicine approach.

Global Health Council  This one helps put global health issues into perspective to help us understand how they impact us – how health concerns in certain countries can impact the rest of us.  Obviously topic has been important over the last year and as the world has gotten “smaller” it will continue to be.

Keep An Eye On Your “Other” Health – Now Is The Time!

June 4th, 2021

By Dr. Scot Goldberg, MD

Okay that’s a strange title for a blog post on a doctor’s website….right?  What the heck is “other” health?  Well most of what we’ve heard and what we were focused on for over a year was Covid-19.  It was pervasive in the news, in our lives and in our collective consciousness, and as a result many OTHER health issues took a backseat in a number of ways.

Other Health

Covid has had an effect on our health collectively – mentally because of the anxiety, isolation, fear, loss – you name it.  Physically because many people stayed away from any “unnecessary” trips to the doctor and worse yet even some potentially necessary trips to the hospital.  While the good news is the medical community forged ahead and didn’t stop working on advances in medical and surgical technologies, the bad news is that as people start to go back to the doctor many are finding that they avoided it for too long and certain illnesses went untreated for too long.

If you hadn’t noticed we have the pandemic under control now in the United States.  If you’ve been vaccinated, great.  If you haven’t yet, please do.  If you’ve been focused on being a part of the solution to the pandemic and done a great job with staying safe from Covid-19, fantastic.  But if you’ve neglected the “other” health, (and you’ve probably figured out by now that the “other” isn’t actually “other” at all) NOW is the time to get on top of it.  If you’ve been putting off getting to the doctor to have something checked out you could be making it worse by neglecting it further.  If this sounds self-serving to get you in to see us then so be it – we can live with that.  Just don’t wait.  Please.

5 Reasons To Get Excited About The Future Of Medicine

May 7th, 2021

By Dr. Scot Goldberg, MD

Advancements in medicine have made our lives better on Earth in so many ways over the centuries, and as with all technology it seems to be picking up pace.  Just look at how fast the Covid-19 vaccines were safely developed!  Please get yours by the way!

Future

Meanwhile there are myriads of reasons to be optimistic and excited about new developments but here are a few articles that have caught our eye recently that we wanted to share in one place here on the blog.

5 Reasons To Get Excited About The Future Of Medicine

  1. The fight against Alzheimer’s Disease seems to be progressing.  According to this article Alzheimer’s is the third leading cause of death in non-pandemic years of older adults, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer.  It’s a horrible disease and new hope for people dealing with it is exciting indeed.
  2. The future of specialized and precision medicine means better treatment.  In the future therapies will be increasingly directed based on an individual’s profile. Precision medicine has been particularly successful in targeting various aspects of DNA in the treatment of various diseases, particularly cancer.  DNA repair and other advancements are really encouraging as outlined in this article!
  3. Wearable technology is advancing to the point of providing valuable data to help monitor our health.  Holy moly – it’s amazing where some of this is going.  The latest Apple watches for example are likely to gain blood pressure, blood glucose and blood alcohol monitoring.  It’s really exciting!
  4. The ocean – yes the ocean – is becoming a resource for new drugs to fight cancer.  How neat is this?  As the final quote in this article tells us, “You might think that we know the depths of the ocean and the biodiversity of the ocean, but it is still largely uncharted.  There is really cool new chemistry in the ocean and we just need to be brave to go in and find it.”
  5. MANY MORE – okay I’m going to cheat a little here but this article from the Cleveland Clinic outlines 10 more – some of which are really incredible like breakthroughs in multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis treatments!
